I started out just to feel out musical taste... then thought i branch out to all media.

Just how "alternative" are we?

  • I came out at 28. By then my musical tastes were set. I love rock and roll and the blues. Trying to find someone to go with me to a local venue is too hard a search. I enjoyed disco when I first came out and then rapidly reached a point where I thought "Is THIS all gay people like?" I wanted to go to a leather bar that had some hard rock playing instead of feather-boa tossing disco diva tunes. Certainly wasn't here in Atlanta. Once or twice while visiting Southern CA, I'd hit a bar and feel the testosterone surging with some hot rock.

Quentin Crisp (look him up if you don't know him) said "A lifetime of disco is too high a price to pay for my sexuality." If I had little else in common with that man, this one statement won me over.

Otherwise, I also love world music (broad category for sure), big band, dirty soul, occasional classical pieces, new age, ambient (mind numbing works for me after a hard day's work). Because of my love for Renaissance faires, I'm developing an interest in some of the music from the period.

  • I should have born into the British class system or a jew, which doesn't explain my hardcore love of funk and soul. My musical tastes have certainly grown according to there own plans. I didn't like country until I met my ex and he schooled me in it's incarnations and history. I didn't come to like Led Zepplin until I had gone from Jazz, then Rock'nRoll, New Wave, Soul, and Blues and Gospel. I guess I'm trying to not pre-judge anymore. I do have certain things that yank my crank, like the Mamas and the Papas, Lambert Hendricks and Ross and Sergio Mendes. Because I'm a singer, I am attracted to vocal music and vocal harmony.

Books, hmm. For a good portion I pretty much only read Science Fiction. I like biographies, science, history art and architecture. I'm not a big poetry fan. My current favorite book of all time is "I Capture the Castle" by Dodie Smith. I love Dorothy L. Sayers and John Hersey, too. Since Pop Culture is my bailiwick, People and National Enquirer are necessary. Does porn count?

Film: I worked at an Art House movie chain for ten years and have little patience for spending money on poorly put together movies anymore. I am not a fan of Horror in general or War movies. I like Haley Mills and Pre-Code and Screwball. I've stopped liking foreign and art-house just cause. My favorite movies are Thoroughly Modern Millie and Babette's Feast. I also like Shakes the Clown and Dude, Where's my Car. I was most disappointed in American Beauty.

I'm pretty much a Pop Culture whore. So, if you are paying, I'm there.
    • Movies:Billy Wilder, Orson Welles, Kurisawa, Francois Ozon, Fassbinder, Gregg Araki.

Tv: (When i get a chance to watch....and there will be periods of absolutely NO TV watchage...) I will watch (almost) anything on these networks; Discovery, Discovery Times, Discovery Health, History, History international, TLC, Science Channel. I'm quite fond of the First 48. it gets addictive. Since im a documentary hound those channel will provide with my fix in under an hour. Suffice to say i love public television esspecially PBS. Nove and Frontline are always stapples when i'm in front of the talking window. When I'm feeling as if i want some microwaved junk for the mind vh1's gaggle of celeb reality/pop culture-centric programming hits the spot. Best week Ever and I Love New York are shows i Tivo. Yes. I Tivo. I still carry a torch for Six Feet Under. Masters of Horror on Showtime. and I ador The L word because the lezzies in suits and big bank accounts put on a better show than we ever did. Adult swim on Cartoon Network. The Hunger force rocks...and absolutely anything else they program is mandatory late night viewing. Project Runway,Top Design and Top Chef interest me bacause they showcase the creative process and talented people with imaginations actually compete and win. The only reality game shows i can tolerate are on Bravo. and I watch Soap Operas. Have since i was a little child...so i keep up with them from time to time. I said it. *sigh* a closet case no more.

Books: Strange thing is i dont read much fiction. I still read Aldous Huxly, william S boroughs, Irvine Welsh and a few other novelist who are newer, who put out the more experimental novels that get press...... but I don't regularly search for Fiction novels to read and be inspired by as i do with non fiction. Most of the books i read i dont even know the authors names... but Peter Russell, David Icke,Howard Bloom and Richard Dawkins come to mind in people i follow. Books i own and read currently: 50 things you are not supposed to know 2, Everything you know about Sex is wrong, The Einstien Factor, Real Boys: Rescusing our sons from the myths of boyhood, The lucifer Principle, the Selfish Gene.

Music: Boards of Canada!! Radiohead!!......... and............ get the idea.

Film: By Directors- Ingmar Bergman,Stanley Kubrick, Gregg Araki (I'll forget he made Splendor) Jean-Luc Godard, Darren Aronofsky, Orson Wells, Lars Von Trier, Thomas Vinterberg, Pierre Paolo Passolini, John Waters, Andy Warhol (he made SOME really good films), michael Gondry. Todd Solondz.

Some favorite films of mine i will watch over and over again.

Magnolia, The Seventh Seal, Wild Strawberries. HAPPINESS. (I know the dialogue inside out! That film is the bible for the Human condition) The Doom Generation. Fritz the Cat. Neverending story. Dogville. The Celebration. Serial Mom.

TV: my TV is being used only if there's a Eropean Football game on... I'm a FC Barcelona fanatic and wouldn't miss a champions league game or a spanish league game no matter what... now, I know it isn't very alternative of me to watch football, but you have to admit, it aint that queer either.... :)
besides that, my all time favourite series is definitely Six Feet under, Oz takes second place
and my weekly downloads are: Family Guy, South Park, American Dad, Drawn Together and Dexter
  • Stuff you can buy: Classic soul, especially the Muscle Shoals sessions: Clarence Carter, Young Aretha, Staples Signers -- basicly anthing Rick Hall produced and Roger Hawkins was on drums and David Hood on bass; cool jazz like Mike Franks; Morphine, AC/DC, X, Pine Hills Haints, Driveby Truckers (old school DBT before they first went to Europe), acoustic Appalachian string music, Beethoven, Gavin Bryers, Cure, Clash, New Order, Eno, Astrid Hadad...pretty electic.
Stuff you can't buy: any band that sounds cool and I like their word of mouth.

Books: Confederacy of Dunces, Moo, Down by the Riveside, Maupin's Tales, a lot of dry academic stuff.

Visual art: Socialist Realism (I find the sincerity charming and technique outstanding), old Soviet War Posters, B&W photogs, especially those with excrutingly painful styling and ageless.

Movies: Almodovar, Manon series, le Retour de Martin Guerre, The Hunger, Saw (scared the bejesus out of me), old Hitchcock, Eisenstein.

TV: Law and Order freak, love to scream and hiss at the "contestants" on the VH1 and MTV shows, C-Span (especially 2), Democracy Now and other LINK TV shows, Family Guy (I root for Stewie to kill his mom and both Meg and Chris and the Pewterschmidts with her). Hitler Channel sometimes, TDC, A&E sometimes, PBS a lot -- gonna be more when Moyers is back on or something novel like the modern production the Met did of The Magic Flute. And a horse and mule training show that is on a back channel!
