The "secrets" of gay men

I was just mentally tripping out over what "IS NORMAL" to us gay men....and what would FREAK straight people out .

When I mean normal, I'm guessing the majority of gay men in this Tribe Know other gay who like arm pit hair and even themselves like to sniff and lick a pit once in awhile. Or Know of or ARE someone who would pay 45 bucks for a porn stars jock strap (Like me...hahah)... Or the fact that we go online and look at piss vids... It's somewhat more Normal amongst us... but even straight men don't discuss amongst themselves piss play.

I have a friend from college who has actually been asked by co-workers if he is gay simply because he knows what simple terms like "bottom" or "top" mean. He finds it amusing to explain such things to his conservative banker co-workers just to see their reactions. I've known him for many years and even stood up in his wedding in 1993 and he is completely straight. But even though we are very good friends and he knows I'm gay, there are some topics we just don't discuss.

I would have to add rimming on the list of things not to talk about with most folks. Even a lot of gay men are completely appalled by the idea. I have female friends that I can talk about these things, but few straight men, very few. There was one guy, but he was a bit of a freak like me. :)

i do admire the sexual frankness - and the maturity and security that enables that type of conversation - that the gay community possesses. what would make most straight suburban folks blanche with distress and bewilderment is happy hour talk (or "how i spent my weekend") in the hood.

tho, on the flipside: i was in LA this past weekend, and at a mellow gathering, i was talking to a young woman, who out of the blue, started discussing vividly her time as a former dominatrix. without the slightest batting of an eye/hiccup in conversation. it was fantastic. (but then again, that's urban LA. and she was a total fag hag. ;-)

    Secrets?

Yeah, a few. I guess. As hackneyed as the phrase has become I guess it does apply: "It's a gay thing. You just wouldn't understand." And that covers stuff like rimming - as close to cunnilingus as gay men are likely to ever get.

It also covers sex clubs. I mean, have you ever tried to explain "Blow Buddies" to a straight guy? Or your average bathhouse either?

Nah, that stuff doesn't get talked about "out of school."

I have this straight friend. He lives with his girlfriend. He is freaking out because she is not the sex bomb she once was, and he views masturbation an unsatisfying, mundane chore that he has to do since he is not getting it from the g/f.

I, on the other hand, find it to be a marvelous exercise in exploring consciousness, and cannot fathom anyone being unable to give the most simple pleasure to themselves.

From what I have gathered, that may be the case a lot more than I could have imagined.

On the complete other hand, I am also unwilling to partake in the opposite, which would be to have sex with every man walking down the street. I see people all around me doing this, and find it hard to comprehend how it is that they get their emotional needs met. Or, is it as I suspect, that they don't

      Hmm.

      LOVE TO ALL

That's a rather ignorant and heterophobic assumption.

Heterosexuals are into W/S or piss, and yes there are bath houses and sex clubs for heterosexuals and men and women.

Also rimming isn't only something that all bi/gay men are into and it's not something that's only "gay" sex since heterosexuals and people of all orientations love to eat ass!

You're bisexual and into kink/BDSM so you should know this!

I was having dinner the other night with my sister and her husband and he asks "so, whats docking?". I explained it and neither of them were phased. Maybe they are an exception to the rule?

        Dave,

Are we talking about the overall het world or only about the kink / fetish part of the het world? The kinky het folk are in an extreme minority when compared to the rest of the het world. At least the ones who are more active than the married het couples who get all turned on by a "slap and a tickle" session once a year or so.

For those kinky het folk, they've as much difficulty and as much warm reception in trying to explain their kink to vanilla het folk as gays do trying to explain the limits of their sexuality to "normal" het folk.

While tolerance has greatly increased for a lot of things, and while at least awareness of the kink world has also increased in the mainstream het / vanilla world (thank you Madonna!) there's still a pretty vast gulf therein. And it's neither ignorant nor heterophobic to point this out.

I meant among heterosexual people in general since we all live in the same world and we're all human.

I don't see there being a heterosexual "world" just like I don't see there being a real gay "world" or even a true gay "culture" or gay "community" at all. What gets mistaken as being a gay/GLBT "culture" or "community" is really just mass consumerism and conformity by gay/GLBT/queer people. I also wouldn't consider gay ghettos like the castro or other gay neighborhoods/areas in cities to be a gay "community" either because they're such a mixed crowd nowadays and all types of people of all orientations work/live/hang out there.

Back on topic though, BDSM is REALLY mainstream nowadays among hets to the point that it's almost a cliche though.

I have het friends who aren't even into BDSM at all talk about Master/slave references or bondage or things like that and it's certainly not a taboo subject among young people who are say 35 or younger.

Then there are hets who are into BDSM but don't call it that and just enjoy spanking or bondage.

Madonna may have done something but not much and I think overall there are tons of references to BDSM in mainstream pop culture.

Even family guy made fun of it in the heh "the safeword is Banana" episode, there was a male character in the Sopranos who liked to top from the bottom and sniffed poppers while Tony Sopranos' sister fucked him with a vibrator and called him a whore and said how she was going to pimp him out, there was the crazy fucked up rape/BDSM scene in Pulp Fiction, and in the show Desperate Housewives one guy cheats on his wife by going to a Dominatrix and paying for sex from her.

Maybe it's just different to me because I've always grown up knowing about it?

Even as a kid I remember watching TV movies where someone would get tied up in bed or there was one where this guy had a sex dream about a woman whipping him and then he woke up.

Ummmm....I would say the subject is more mainstream, in that generally people are less inhibited in observing, considering or discussing the topic, but it's still far from the mainstream with regard to practice or chosen lifestyle. To most people it's a practice they've only just briefly flirted with or have only experienced vicariously through the media - the latter being the largest majority.

If you're going by what people discuss, consider that most of what they say they've done or tried is only just that, talk (read: bullshit) just to seem cool and more experienced or adventurous than they actually are.

Why do you think anything gay men do would "freak straight people out"? Don't you think they have kinks? I know a lot of straight people and have seen and heard a lot of kinks. How about a common straight thing of a guy WANTING some unknown guy to fuck his girlfriend? Or the guys who want their girlfriends to make humiliating comments about their cock size? I could go on and on, but that's enough for now.
