The Hormel Center at the San Francisco Public Library
100 Larkin Street, 3rd Floor
FREE & Open to the Public
September 12 -- December 2, 2009

Famed fashion & art photographer Victor Arimondi was known for his unique eye and sensuous style. This is the first major retrospective of his work since his death from AIDS/HIV in 2001
www.victorarimondi.net

If a picture is worth a thousand words then the iconic images of photographer Victor Arimondi (www.victorarimondi.net) are an unfinished epic: a tone poem that blurs the boundaries of fashion and art, and delves into realms of the sensual, the celebratory and society’s disenfranchised. In the first major retrospective of the artist’s work since his death from AIDS/HIV in 2001, A Compassionate Eye: The Work of Victor Arimondi explores the incredible breadth of the internationally-acclaimed photographer often compared to – but lesser known than – such contemporaries as Mapplethorpe, and Bianci. The exhibit runs through December 2 at the James C. Hormel Gay & Lesbian Center of San Francisco’s Main Public Library (100 Larkin Street, 3rd Floor). Entrance to the exhibit is free and open to the public.

Part of New York’s heady “pop art” era, Arimondi started as a fashion model before turning the lens on his former life often citing his admiration for the work of Avedon as one of his inspirations. Born in Italy in 1942, it was in Sweden that Arimondi was discovered while working as a laborer. Soon, his rough-hewn beauty made him one of Europe’s most popular regulars in print and on the runway, an experience which led him to his ultimate career. His varied palette and incredible output – with more than 3000 photos -- included male nudes, high fashion treatments, photo montages and later documenting the plight of the homeless and the onslaught of AIDS / HIV. When he died in his adopted home of San Francisco on July 24, 2001, his face and work had graced most of the world’s top fashion publications and several books, now collectors’ items.

“My approach to photography has never been causal,” Arimondi once said. “Since I posed in front of the camera so many years, my experience with talented photographers made me realize a way to express my inner world. My approach to beauty is dominated by my classical background and European style. I came to this country to further develop my style and spirit – I believe that I have been faithful to my ideal.”

I have put out the word on a number of neworks that I am seeking men who would like to drum and dance and be naked and charged together for more than just sex play but a sort of meerging of bodies and the experience of pure sensuality without attitude or judgement. The goal is to expand identity to include the whole group and so we are one experiencing organism together. Its not about getting off or fucking or impersonal sex - its about transpersonal sex. The books are Lord Horror, Motherfuckers: The Auschwitz of Oz, Baptised in the Blood of Millions, Fuck Off and Die(an actual title), and the latest one, Horror Panegyric. (Are they same? Separated at birth? Are these mindless questions?)
It sounds like a very enlightening addition to mythology, if only accepted as so.

We didn't know at first he was attached but after we found out we didn't stop either. Turns out that the guilt got to him and he couldn't keep his secret anymore. Surprisingly enough, instead of getting mad, his "husband" looked at our pictures, and decided that he should be able to fuck us too. The guy is super hot, don't get me wrong, but it feels super awkward facing the guy whose bed I have been fucking in EVERY time he goes out of town. So tonight, we are off to Gameworks, for what feels like a blind date, and I am nervous as shit. Serves me right, being such a slut and all, but damn, is this a good idea???
More than 17 percent of positive people in China possess a drug-resistant strain of HIV, Chinese researchers announced at the XVII International AIDS Conference in Mexico City, Reuters reports.

Positive people can run out of options quickly as only seven of the more than 20 HIV drugs are available in China. The virus usually mutates into a drug-resistant form only after people have been on medication for some time. The mutant strain was found in Chinese families with low and unstable incomes.

The Chinese government estimated last year about 700,000 people are infected with HIV.

Over the past 10 or so days, I have been participating, both online and in person, in discussions about Pride. (Call it what you will — Gay Pride, Lesbian and Gay Pride, Queer Pride — it's got many names now — in Chicago, some years back, the big parade simply became the Pride Parade, to avoid all the alphabet soup, I think.) Here in Chicago, as in New York and San Francisco and some other cities, we have our Pride festivities on the last weekend of June, which honors the Stonewall Riots, which is, of course, how Pride parades began. I know some other cities have them at different times of the year.

Anyway, lots of cool people whom I respect have said they basically avoid the parade and other Pride activities. Not necessarily because they don't like crowds, but they just don't like what the parade (and other events) have turned into. Now, I imagine that complaining about the commercialization of Pride this particular Tribe is preaching to the choir, and I am one of many who disdain the senseless largely drunken embrace of the corporate takeover of our parade — but I think there's more to it than that. I mean, it's our fucking holiday! Why do we let Miller Lite and Starbucks and an endless stream of straight politicians (only some of whom are really our allies) take it over? And then I say to myself: Well, make a difference! Challenge the status quo. (Not only to make myself feel better — but to try to clue in the younger generation as to what Pride should be about. At least, according to me. ;-)

Does your city have a Dyke March? (Chicago does.) If so, I highly recommend attending. That's where you'll find all the coolest queers — the dykes, fags, trannies who know there's still work to be done. This year, Chicago's Dyke March wasn't in a "safe" queer enclave on the north side; it was in a neighborhood on the south side, one with lots of artists and a lot of Latino/a immigrants. Most of them embraced us. It was a super day, so much fun and empowering. And of course, moving it to a largely non-white neighborhood helps encourage conversations that need to happen around the racism (whether institutional or individual) in our own LGBT community.

The next day, a very small crew faeries (seven of us, men and women both) went to the big Pride Parade on Sunday dressed like corporate mascots. We did a mock wedding with a mock priest (the corporate-merger vows were hilarious, although I'll admit, we needed a bullhorn to make them heard). We got to celebrate California's gay marriage advancement (still important for many of us in terms of equal rights, whether or not we personally value the two-person marriage model) while satirizing the corporations who just tap us as a market with extra disposable income. (There's a pic in my profile, in case you're curious.)

My point is: We can stay home and gripe about what Pride has become. Or we can get busy and do something about it. Hopefully with humor — that always seems to work best. (What's the old adage? "You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.") And let us not forget, there's also, always, a place for celebration. Let's do the work AND have fun. Strive for balance!

The topics of "normal" and “queer” vs. “gay” resurface, not just here, but also implicitly in the many questions asked whether Senator Craig is gay (or to a lesser extent around Governor Spitzer's resignation). It has led me to ponder our current political state versus similar historic eras and wonder ...

Can it be said we have entered a period of Enlightenment and much of the bitter politics and exposure of moralists (like Senator Craig) as hypocrites is simply part of the natural progression from old to new traditions? Words like “gay” and “queer” may simply be terms of a cultural revolution, a part of the Enlightenment.

- “Homosexual.” A clinical term and nothing more. It defines sexual attraction and nothing else. “Homo” for same”; “sexual” for “sex.” We are all homo and heterosexual to one degree or another because we all find attractiveness to some extent in people of the same and opposite sex.

- “Gay.” A man in acknowledgement of that small facet of his greater essence which involves homosexual attraction. Generally unashamed of the facet as well, the gay man is one who has rejected and become liberated from the confines of institutional and societal norms which dictate that to be “normal” (i.e., “blessed”) one is naturally, and must remain exclusively, heterosexual.

- “Queer.” The benefit that a life lived outside of societal norms bestows. To be queer is to appreciate a greater sentience, to be enlightened, able to appreciate the beautiful and ugly that make up the simple and complex nature of life, more capable of embracing the divine gifts of sight, sound, touch, taste, smell, and senses yet imagined.

- “Fag”/“Faggot.” The pejorative. An aural weapon, like “witch,” used by those in power to instill institutional fear in others in order to hold what’s left of a weakening position in face of an enlightened society. (A “faggot” being the pyre used to burn heretics and witches during prior Enlightenments, its root is found in ironic violence.)

The distinction between “gay” and “queer” is subtle and probably best-grasped by young people to whom concepts like “labels” to define sexuality and “the closet” are quaint traditions (like flat worlds and witch hunts and blood letting). It’s why “GLBT” groups more and more become “GLBTQ.” It’s why college students and 20-somethings are quick to embrace “Queer.” Born and raised in the early understanding of this Enlightenment, they know their sexuality, your sexuality, my sexuality, those “G,” “L,” “B,” “T” labels, matter little and hardly threaten whether they or I or others are blessed in the greater realm of existence. Attraction-be-damned, if joy and camaraderie is found in the style and lights and music and dance involving men or women or both in a “straight” or “gay” bar, so be it. Sexuality like art and music and all things sensual, Enlightenment reveals, is naturally fluid.

Larry Craig isn’t “gay.” He, and his ilk, are victimizers, predators. They are the Puritan fathers clinging to old notions, leading Salem to witch hunts, shackled by ruefulness, ensconced in reactionary fear of that which is different. Like hypocritical Puritan ancestors, in seeing Enlightenment's possibility, they force themselves to be blind, become both enthralled by and terrified of the possibility that Enlightenment is real and the human soul can run deeper than imagined. Unable to conceive “blessed” as anything but what they have always understood, yet captivated, they are driven to unsatisfying and furtive pleasures seeped in denial. Their lives become hypocritical, dark, self-loathing existences, the antithesis of Enlightened “Queer,” into which they can only try to keep others in order to maintain the illusion of that which had been “normal” and not be left behind.

“Burn the witch” 300 years ago had less to do with witchcraft than it did with the fear of a new consciousness that geographic independence the New World an ocean away from Old World traditions revealed. “Hate the sin, not the sinner” has less to do today with sex than it does with the realities brought to light in the Enlightenment of the Q Revolution.

YES....you will see this post in my various tribes, so if you've seen it in another tribe you're a member of.........Don't Bitch. OKAY! And I say this in jest:-)

This gay dating site is unique in regards, to its approach, for its membership. Here’s the premise of the site, written and originated by the creator of the site:

“Welcome to Dissident Dating”

“Maybe you don't test for HIV or maybe you did and just don't trust the results. Maybe you've learned that AIDS is not caused by HIV, and that tests are inaccurate. Then you can meet like-minded people here, make friends, date, and...well, its up to you! On this site no one posts "status" because negative and positive are proven to be meaningless or at best misleading. Why not live and love!”

My Observation:

With all the fear and pandemonium about dating (these days) a person labeled ‘so-called’ hiv-antibody positive, this site doesn’t ask that you reveal your ‘status’ because the members are dissidents, and have accepted, not to accept, the fear based paradigm of hiv ‘antibodies’ being the cause of aids.

Definition of ‘Antibody’: any of numerous Y-shaped protein molecules produced by B cells as a primary immune defense, each molecule and its clones having a unique binding site that can combine with the complementary site of a foreign antigen, as on a virus or bacterium, thereby disabling the antigen and signaling other immune defenses.

So if you’ve been labeled hiv-antibody positive, or negative, or just don’t know, no one on the dating site will judge you about that. Just be prepared for a vast amount of mind-blowing (and boggling) knowledge from some of the members, you may come to know, on the site.

What I find interesting about the site, is it’s ability, to reach out to people, who, are taking a different stance and approach on dating, loving, meeting someone new, and being with someone who shares their views about the ‘Otherside’ of the hiv paradigm and model. And hey…you just might learn something new, and a thang-or-two, from a member, or so.

This is not a debate, or bitching, or mud-slinging site; that usually happens after you’re in a relationship. It’s a gay DATING site, with a majority of members who are interested in meeting and getting to know others, who question(s) the model we call hiv. Revealing your status (I would assume) – to another member – it entirely up to you and he, if you care to include it in your dialogue, but not required.

The site is new, so it will be a matter of time, when the membership continues to grow.
It is ‘not’ to assume that every member joining -- this site -- are considered as hiv antibody pos, because a lot of people aren’t, because they know enough and don’t believe hiv=aids, to be afraid of being with someone label as pos:
http://www.dissidentdating.com/index.php

Be open-minded. You may met someone who can change you life for the better. One just never knows, where cupid may strike.

It is a tremendous pleasure to announce the publication of edition 2.9 of the ICP at the following link:

http://rosemaryrowe.typepad.com/creampuff_revolution/2008/03/creampuff-welco.html

Creampuff, a.k.a., Roro, who hails from Vancouver, is our first repeat host from Canada. I encourage you to bookmark this edition and visit it over time so that you can enjoy each of the contributions from the world of HIV/AIDS. I hope that you will also join me in thanking Roro for her work this month. We “met” about 2 years ago during the NHL Hockey Championship between Edmonton and the Carolina Hurricanes and have been fast friends since despite some rather competitive invocation of mojo to make our teams win the Stanley Cup. Roro’s sense of compassion combined with her sense of humor makes me quite happy to count her among my friends.

This 21st consecutive edition of the ICP features personal accounts, video, a special musical contribution from UK band Slovo, self-help information and the latest in news from the HIV/AIDS community. I hope that you will spend some time reading and that you will leave comments for the contributors. It is through your comments that we can hone our messages and learn how you feel about our work. Please feel free to leave your thoughts with each of the contributors and for our gracious host.

This will be Mshairi’s first stint as host of the ICP although she has been a frequent contributor in the past. Mshairi’s edition will mark the first time that the ICP will have been hosted by an African host. If you like poetry, you should scroll through her blog. A selection of her poetry also appears at one of my favorite sites, The Other Voices Poetry International Project, an anthology of poetry from around the world that has been recognized by UNESCO, here:

And the test are suppose to be accurate, huh? There will be others stepping up.

Verdict of $2.5 Million Over False-Positive HIV Diagnosis Brings up Basic Problems With AIDS Testing and Treatment, Say Scientists

CHICAGO, Dec. 12, 2007--A lawsuit decided today against the University of Massachusetts Medical Center over consequences of an allegedly false-positive HIV antibody test exposes basic problems with the test and treatments for all persons taking them, according to a high-ranking medical researcher who has advised the plaintiff's lawyer on the case. The verdict, issued today, awarded $2.5 million to the plaintiff.

The complaint by Audrey Serrano, 45, in court hearings this week in Worcester, Mass., focuses on the absence of a “confirmatory” Western Blot test in her records. However, Andrew Maniotis, Ph.D., research assistant professor in the Department of Pathology, University of Illinois-Chicago School of Medicine, contends that, though the reliability of all HIV testing is not on trial in court here, the case history opens questions about it. And, because Serrano developed illnesses commonly defined as “AIDS-related conditions” only after taking HIV medications known as “highly active antiretroviral therapy” (HAART), the drugs themselves appear to have caused “AIDS.”

Rethinking AIDS (RA) has been asking such questions since its founding in 1991. Etienne de Harven, M.D., president of RA, says, “It is urgent that we open a public debate on the highly suspect reliability of all HIV testing. Moreover, I fully share Dr. Maniotis' concern about the safety of HIV drugs.” Further resources are online at the group’s Web site, www.rethinkingaids.com.

Rodney Richards, Ph.D., worked on the development of antibody (ELISA) and genetic “viral load” tests for Amgen and holds some related patents. “The diagnosis of being HIV positive is based on arbitrary combinations of tests, none of which are approved for diagnosing HIV,” he says. “In fact there is no test for HIV. It’s just an illusion.”

Raising issues of informed consent for all persons submitting to HIV antibody testing, the test kits themselves contain disclaimers that doctors rarely, if ever, share with patients. For example, Abbott Laboratories’ ELISA test kit, typically used as a preliminary test, warns:

“ELISA testing alone cannot be used to diagnose AIDS.”

Confirmation of an ELISA result with a Western Blot test is currently required as a “standard of care.” Epitope’s Western Blot package insert reads:

“Do not use this kit as the sole basis for HIV infection.”

“This is somewhat more concerning, since the Western Blot is supposed to be a highly accurate test, used to confirm that an ELISA is not a false positive,” says Dr. Maniotis. “Moreover, the peer-reviewed literature gives substantial evidence that the virus ‘HIV’ has never been isolated in purified form free of contaminating cellular debris in order to generate the so-called ‘specific viral antigens’ used in the test kits.”

Serrano, now acknowledged to have always tested HIV negative and therefore not to have been at risk for developing AIDS, nevertheless suffered from several AIDS-defining illnesses, including wasting, herpes, and oral thrush, while taking HAART. She also suffered from other health problems, including constant diarrhea (AIDS-defining under the African definition), muscle wasting, profound fatigue, non-specific skin lesions, oral thrush, herpes outbreaks, severe nosebleeds, constant gynecological bleeding and pain from ovarian cysts, fibrocystic breast lesions, hyperplastic pituitary lesions, and severe heart and respiratory difficulties.

Labels for HAART drugs actually list these conditions as possible side effects, suggesting that the drugs themselves cause AIDS-related conditions, Maniotis says.

Serrano’s experience is, sadly, not unique. Dr. Maniotis chose to investigate her case because, he says, “it is typical of many cases reviewed and, as it illustrates so clearly the development of AIDS-related conditions in a woman testing HIV negative who was healthy before she took HAART, strongly suggests that profound paradigm shifts are urgently needed to avoid more human rights violations.”

Rethinking AIDS: The Group for the Scientific Reappraisal of the HIV/AIDS Hypothesis (“RA” or “the Group”) was formed in 1991 to express the concerns of a growing number of renowned scientists and medical doctors about HIV research and the resulting human rights abuses. In 1995, by a letter published in Science, the Group called for a thorough reappraisal of the existing evidence for and against the HIV/AIDS hypothesis and recommended that critical epidemiological studies be undertaken.

Among RA’s founders and key members are Harvard microbiologist Dr. Charles Thomas; 1993 Nobel laureate for chemistry Dr. Kary Mullis; Nature Biotechnology co-founder Dr. Harvey Bialy; University of California at Berkeley molecular biologist Dr. Peter Duesberg and the late Yale mathematician Dr. Serge Lang, both members of the National Academy of Sciences; professor of medical physics at the Royal Perth Hospital in Western Australia Dr. Eleni Papadopulos; and Glasgow University professor emeritus of public health and World Health Organization consultant Dr. Gordon Stewart.

The Group’s current president, Dr. Etienne de Harven, is a professor emeritus of pathology at the University of Toronto and a former cancer researcher at Sloan-Kettering Institute, New York (1956-1981). He produced the first electron microscopic studies of a retrovirus (the murine Friend leukemia virus) and was director of the Electron Microscopy Laboratory at the Banting Institute, Department of Pathology, University of Toronto.
So the dumb hetties in the Movie Whore tribe didn't respond well to my thread asking the tribe to out sexually ambiguous or not so ambiguous Characters ala Jk Rowlings outting Daddy Dumbldore. Basically Rowlings told us all that If Dumbledore lived in San Francisco his favorite bar would be Twin Peaks.

So i thought it would be brilliant to out characters in filmic History....

like

Sebastian- "The Little Mermaid" : "Such a prissy pig bottom. Even as a kid I thought Sebastian was queer. In Hindsight, he's a be an A-Gay with a Job at the Philharmonic, already with a husband ... WHO cheats on him because he's a such a tight ass. Everyonce in a while Sebastain gets away from from his tank and crawls to blow buddies on;ly after getting hammered at Powerhouse. Sebastian has a secret leather fetish. This Crab has the Crabs!

Leon- From "The Professional" 1994- I was watching this film again by accident on cinemax while cleaning my room and organizing my pornography by title and scene and size quite methodically, when bam it hit me! This sweet, uncomfortable assassin who took in a teenage girl he felt, understandably, sorry for was gay. Loner gay. Hadn't gotten any for a long time...like Dumbledore.... but gay. His sweet gentle spirit clashed just enough with his cold hearted killer.. that i thought... hey this dude is gay. Unwritten... but a homo.

Stuart- From "Stuart saves his family"- This is obvious. It was the early 90's but Al franken knew exactly who stuart was. A GAY self help expert who couldn't deal with his homosexuality in his family frame so he dealt with the alcoholism and pure craziness as a way to dissuade his family from focus on his blatant queerness.

come on Play along!

60 folks now on the email list! Welcome newcomers!

It happened to me tonight: I went bar hopping this evening and came to the realization that when I go out on a Saturday night I don't meet the people I want to meet. And heck, this is Folsom Street Fair weekend. Too many people, for one, and too much noise to get into good conversations. And the cruise crush is on. Too much distraction! I wanted to turn in my gay card right then and there.

So, I decided to move the Gay Geeks gathering from Saturday afternoons to Saturday NIGHTS, offering you a TRUE ALTERNATIVE in socializing.

Okay, I'm now calling the Gay Geeks gathering, "Gay Geeks Saturday Night" (a play on an old big band tune, "Jukebox Saturday Night" if you must know).

Info for next gathering:

GAY GEEKS SATURDAY NIGHT
Saturday October 6, 8:00pm
Muddy's Coffeehouse (new venue!)
1304 Valencia Street at 24th, San Francisco

Parking: within 2 blocks typically Public Transit: 1 block from BART 24th Street station, also on Muni lines 26, 48, and 67, and 1 block from lines 14 and 49. Truly a public transit paradise.

Muddy's does not have a good selection of food, but the owner allows people to bring in food from elsewhere. There is a great Mexican restaurant around the corner, also a falafel place and a burger place (with Niman Ranch beef) nearby.

What's the theory behind the Gay Geeks Gathering? Gay Geeks is a haven for intellectuals and visionaries. Thus, your learned geekery is most welcome. If you study languages, streetcars, oceans, religion, have a collection of Harper's Magazine dating to 1909, you're running for mayor of SF, or you've just built a propane-fired Victorian house on wheels, you're our kind of people. Come on by.

The Gay Geeks Gathering is NOT about computers, and it doesn’t focus on gay issues. We don't meet in a "gay" venue, or in a "gay" neighborhood. We're about breaking away from ALL of that! The Gay Geeks Gathering breaks the mold!

TOPICS NEXT TIME: Encouraged but not limited to:

(1) How do we know if someone is crazy or not? Is George W Bush crazy? Are the people running for mayor of SF crazy? Is the guy who begs for money at the freeway offramp crazy?

(2) Will something replace conventional news gathering now that newspapers appear to be on the brink of collapse? Is a news wiki a better idea?

(3) Why do people continue to collect newspaper clippings when the Internet is available, or collect clothes when they're out of style or don't fit anymore? Is collecting stuff specifically an American disease? Or is it a disease at all?

--David Kaye, founder of the Original Gay Geeks Gathering (established January 1997)
Please Share with Your Friends

As usual, I would like to ask you to post a permanent link to the ICP homepage (you can get a widget there as well) on your blogs or websites and to share the word of this edition with your readers and friends. The more people who know about the ICP, the more likely it will be that we will continue to receive excellent contributions. In fact, feel free to nominate your own HIV/AIDS related contributions from your favorite blogs or websites. The most powerful stories are those of personal nature, so I would encourage you to seek out or write personal accounts and to share them with the ICP. There are many more of you than of me, so join me in the search for quality blogs that share personal stories about HIV/AIDS from around the world. We have hardly begun to tap into the situation in Asia, so blogs from that region of the world are particularly welcome.

Contribute Your Work

I hope that you will join the growing community of contributors and hosts for this important international forum for genuine voices of AIDS. If you are interested in hosting the ICP, please email me and I will make the process for you as painless as possible. Return hosts are welcome!

To be Removed From or Added To the ICP mailing list:

Please send me an email (ron.hudson@verizon.net) with the word REMOVE or SUBSCRIBE in your subject line to have your name removed or added to the ICP mailing list.

Peace to you and yours.
Hi all,
For my 6th year in a row I will be participating in AIDS Walk Los Angeles. The walk will be taking place on October 21st this year.

I would like to ask you to help me help others in need. To help people who infected and affected by this disease. I walk in support of friends, myself, and for so many others.

If you are able to sponsor me at all it would be greatly appreciated. Every little bit helps. Check out my link above or below and help if you can. If you can not donate then please spread the word to at least 5 other people you can.

At least after a bar make out session you can usually count on a possible follow up visit and you don't end up at home with someone who reeks of cigarette smoke in your bed until the next morning.

Add a bit of casual groping to the make out and it gets real nice.

Its even hotter when you make out on the corner by their apartment...and really really hot when you get cat calls from passing cars.

With that said, I can't help but feel, however, that the geographical heart beat of alternogay culture is in the San Francisco/Bay Area. At the very least, in the context of North America. That area has become the "mecca", it seems for both "normal" and alternative gay culture. I had the privilege of visiting that area about three years ago, and I got the sense that anyone could feel relatively comfortable there, particularly, as an alternative gay person.
Lesbians sentenced for self-defense
All-white jury convicts Black women

By Imani Henry
New York

Published Jun 21, 2007 2:58 AM
On June 14, four African-American women—Venice Brown (19), Terrain Dandridge (20), Patreese Johnson (20) and Renata Hill (24)—received sentences ranging from three-and-a-half to 11 years in prison. None of them had previous criminal records. Two of them are parents of small children.

Their crime? Defending themselves from a physical attack by a man who held them down and choked them, ripped hair from their scalps, spat on them, and threatened to sexually assault them—all because they are lesbians.

The mere fact that any victim of a bigoted attack would be arrested, jailed and then convicted for self-defense is an outrage. But the length of prison time given further demonstrates the highly political nature of this case and just how racist, misogynistic, anti-gay, anti-youth and anti-worker the so-called U.S. justice system truly is.

The description of the events, reported below, is based on written statements by a community organization (FIERCE) that has made a call to action to defend the four women, verbal accounts from court observers and evidence from a surveillance camera.

The attack

On Aug. 16, 2006, seven young, African-American, lesbian-identified friends were walking in the West Village. The Village is a historic center for lesbian, gay, bi and trans (LGBT) communities, and is seen as a safe haven for working-class LGBT youth, especially youth of color.

As they passed the Independent Film Cinema, 29-year-old Dwayne Buckle, an African-American vendor selling DVDs, sexually propositioned one of the women. They rebuffed his advances and kept walking.

“I’ll f— you straight, sweetheart!” Buckle shouted. A video camera from a nearby store shows the women walking away. He followed them, all the while hurling anti-lesbian slurs, grabbing his genitals and making explicitly obscene remarks. The women finally stopped and confronted him. A heated argument ensued. Buckle spat in the face of one of the women and threw his lit cigarette at them, escalating the verbal attack into a physical one.

Buckle is seen on the video grabbing and pulling out large patches of hair from one of the young women. When Buckle ended up on top of one of the women, choking her, Johnson pulled a small steak knife out of her purse. She aimed for his arm to stop him from killing her friend.

The video captures two men finally running over to help the women and beating Buckle. At some point he was stabbed in the abdomen. The women were already walking away across the street by the time the police arrived.

Buckle was hospitalized for five days after surgery for a lacerated liver and stomach. When asked at the hospital, he responded at least twice that men had attacked him.

There was no evidence that Johnson’s kitchen knife was the weapon that penetrated his abdomen, nor was there any blood visible on it. In fact, there was never any forensics testing done on her knife. On the night they were arrested, the police told the women that there would be a search by the New York Police Department for the two men—which to date has not happened.

After almost a year of trial, four of the seven were convicted in April. Johnson was sentenced to 11 years on June 14.

Even with Buckle’s admission and the video footage proving that he instigated this anti-gay attack, the women were relentlessly demonized in the press, had trumped-up felony charges levied against them, and were subsequently given long sentences in order to send a clear resounding message—that self-defense is a crime and no one should dare to fight back.

Political backdrop of the case

Why were these young women used as an example? At stake are the billions of dollars in tourism and real estate development involved in the continued gentrification of the West Village. This particular incident happened near the Washington Square area—home of New York University, one of most expensive private colleges in the country and one of the biggest employers and landlords in New York City. The New York Times reported that Justice Edward J. McLaughlin used his sentencing speech to comment on “how New York welcomes tourists.” (June 17)

The Village is also the home of the Stonewall Rebellion, the three-day street battle against the NYPD that, along with the Compton Cafeteria “Riots” in California, helped launch the modern-day LGBT liberation movement in 1969. The Manhattan LGBT Pride march, one of the biggest demonstrations of LGBT peoples in the world, ends near the Christopher Street Piers in the Village, which have been the historical “hangout” and home for working-class trans and LGBT youth in New York City for decades.

Because of growing gentrification in recent years, young people of color, homeless and transgender communities, LGBT and straight, have faced curfews and brutality by police sanctioned by the West Village community board and politicians. On Oct. 31, 2006, police officers from the NYPD’s 6th Precinct indiscriminately beat and arrested several people of color in sweeps on Christopher Street after the Halloween parade.

Since the 1980s there has been a steady increase in anti-LGBT violence in the area, with bashers going there with that purpose in mind.

For trans people and LGBT youth of color, who statistically experience higher amounts of bigoted violence, the impact of the gentrification has been severe. As their once-safe haven is encroached on by real estate developers, the new white and majority heterosexual residents of the West Village then call in the state to brutalize them.

For the last six years the political LGBT youth group FIERCE has been at the forefront of mobilizing young people “to counter the displacement and criminalization of LGBTSTQ [lesbian, gay, bi, two spirit, trans, and queer] youth of color and homeless youth at the Christopher Street Pier and in Manhattan’s West Village.” (www.fiercenyc.org) FIERCE has also been the lead organization supporting the Jersey Seven and their families.

The trial and the media

Deemed a so-called “hate crime” against a straight man, every possible racist, anti-woman, anti-LGBT and anti-youth tactic was used by the entire state apparatus and media. Everything from the fact that they lived outside of New York, in the working-class majority Black city of Newark, N.J., to their gender expressions and body structures were twisted and dehumanized in the public eye and to the jury.

According to court observers, McLaughlin stated throughout the trial that he had no sympathy for these women. The jury, although they were all women, were all white. All witnesses for the district attorney were white men, except for one Black male who had several felony charges.

Court observers report that the defense attorneys had to put enormous effort into simply convincing the jury that they were “average women” who had planned to just hang out together that night. Some jurists asked why they were in the Village if they were from New Jersey. The DA brought up whether they could afford to hang out there—raising the issue of who has the right to be there in the first place.

The Daily News reporting was relentless in its racist anti-lesbian misogyny, portraying Buckle as a “filmmaker” and “sound engineer” preyed upon by a “lesbian wolf pack” (April 19) and a “gang of angry lesbians.” (April 13)

Everyone has been socialized by cultural archetypes of what it means to be a “man” or “masculine” and “woman” or “feminine.” Gender identity/expression is the way each indivdual chooses or not to express gender in their everyday lives, including how they dress, walk, talk, etc. Transgender people and other gender non-conforming people face oppression based on their gender expression/identity.

The only pictures shown in the Daily News were of the more masculine-appearing women. One of the most despiciable headlines in the Daily News, “‘I’m a man!’ lesbian growled during fight,” (April 13) was targeted against Renata Hill, who was taunted by Buckle because of her masculinity.

Ironically, Johnson, who was singled out by the judge as the “ringleader,” is the more feminine of the four. According to the New York Times, in his sentencing remarks, “Justice McLaughlin scoffed at the assertion made by ... Johnson, that she carried a knife because she was just 4-foot-11 and 95 pounds, worked nights and lived in a dangerous neighborhood.” He quoted the nursery rhyme, “Sticks and stones will break my bones, but names will never hurt me.” (June 15)

All of the seven women knew and went to school with Sakia Gunn, a 19-year-old butch lesbian who was stabbed to death in Newark, N.J., in May 2003. Paralleling the present case, Gunn was out with three of her friends when a man made sexual advances to one of the women. When she replied that she was a lesbian and not interested, he attacked them. Gunn fought back and was stabbed to death.

“You can’t help but wonder that if Sakia Gunn had a weapon, would she be in jail right now?” Bran Fenner, a founding member and co-executive director of FIERCE, told Workers World. “If we don’t have the right to self-defense, how are we supposed to survive?”

National call to action

While racist killer cops continue to go without indictment and anti-immigrant paramilitary groups like the Minutemen are on the rise in the U.S., The Jersey Four sit behind bars for simply defending themselves against a bigot who attacked them in the Village.

Capitalism at its very core is a racist, sexist, anti-LGBT system, sanctioning state violence through cops, courts and its so-called laws. The case of the Jersey Four gives more legal precedence for bigoted violence to go unchallenged. The ruling class saw this case as a political one; FIERCE and other groups believe the entire progressive movement should as well.

Fenner said, “We are organizing in the hope that this wakes up all oppressed people and sparks a huge, broad campaign to demand freedom for the Jersey Four.”

FIERCE is asking for assistance for these young women, including pro-bono legal support, media contacts and writers, pen pals, financial support, and diverse organizational support. For details, visit www.fiercenyc.org.

Jack Malebranche the Androphile

(To read a great review of Androphilia in Portland's lead fag rag Just Out by Nick Pell, go to www.justout.com, click on current issue and go to page 15. Or visit Jack Malebranche’s site, www.jackmalebranche.com, for the author’s own intro to his work.)

Last night I attended Jack Malebranche’s Androphilia reading at Powell’s on Hawthorne (Portland, OR). I had just finished reading the book, which has been giving me much food for thought over the past weeks, and feelings of both dismay and something close to revelation. Undeniably I was also curious to see who else would be there. I expected the crowd to be close to 100% male and I wasn’t disappointed. The discussion seemed awkward at first, but perhaps that initial vulnerability (I hesitate to use the word, knowing the author probably wouldn’t like it) helped endear Malebranche to his audience. I do not believe anyone, regardless of how much they profess indifference to other peoples’ opinions of or feelings about them, is truly immune to the sense of connecting and sharing an understanding with a group of people, especially when they’re standing in a room right in front of them. Malebranche certainly comes off more likable in person, and by the end of the talk, I felt a sense of relief, almost of some kind of healing, which I’m not sure I can explain yet. Part of it came from the tension beforehand of expecting a showdown of sorts between injured sissies and Mr. Drill-Sergeant Malebranche. And to some extent, with the likes of Kaj-Ann Pepper and a tall gentleman who identified himself as “Mama Jo” amongst the audience, that did happen, but it was relatively civilized and peaceful. Mr. Pepper asked if there was room in the world of masculinity for him to wear a skirt to work. Malebranche basically answered No, although with finesse, saying that when you wear women’s clothing you cut yourself off from other men. “It’s not even that they hate you, it’s that they don’t know how to deal with you,” he said.

Although it wasn’t discussed during the Q&A, Malebranche has made no secret of the fact that he’s an ordained priest in the Church of Satan. I’ve been wondering how that fits in, if it does at all, with his masculine-purist vision. He speaks in Androphilia of manhood as a religion, and I’ve seen posts of his promoting essays with titles like “Satanism and Fascism.” This is the one lingering doubt I have about the possibly dark underlying motives of his androphile philosophy. There seem to be covert gleams of admiration for the accomplishments of fascist regimes in the book, for instance on page 73, in the section on Cultural Masculinity: “The Nazis did an especially impressive job of linking National Socialism to manhood, from their youth programs to the overtly masculine way in which they styled themselves.” Towards the beginning of the reading last night, he said a couple times, in response to a question about whether he was really out to get effeminates, “I don’t have the guns or the manpower to take them out.” It seemed to be said in a jestful spirit, but after mulling it over, I can’t help wondering: “What if you did have the guns and manpower to take them out?” But he clearly states in the book (p. 48), “I don’t advocate poor treatment of effeminates.” Since he seems an honorable man, I’ll take him at his word.

There are a couple other problems I have with Malebranche’s manifesto. As a friend of mine who was also at last night’s reading pointed out, I don’t think Jack Malebranche knows what a feminist really is. Practically the only woman he quotes anywhere in his book is the entertaining but quite insane Camilla Paglia, who can hardly be taken as representative of anyone’s views but her own. Undoubtedly there have been some shrill quasi-separatist feminists in the past who have entirely vilified men and masculinity, but respected feminists like bell hooks have said that true feminism has never been anti-male. (For example, in The Will To Change, hooks asserts, “The radical feminist labeling of all men as oppressors and all women as victims was a way to deflect attention away from the reality of men and our ignorance about them.”) I also see Malebranche as a hypocrite when he derides the way “gays tend to portray straight men as a one-dimensional bunch,” then turns around and does the same thing to gays, painting them all as rainbow-flag-waving, diva-worshipping, “sad, damaged clowns.” What Malebranche doesn’t take into account is that many semi-effeminate homo guys, myself included, are also fed up with the more annoying aspects of gay culture, and have been for some time. I started my own queer alterna-zine in 2005 called Dreck and one of the first things I published was an essay by Jack Malebranche titled “Gay is Dead: Long Live the Homosexual Underground.”

What it boils down to for me is the age-old mantra Live and Let Live. If you’re really into masculinity, great. If you’re really into the opposite of masculinity, great, if that’s something you need to define your life. Personally I’ve reached a point of being fed up with gender politics in general. As Portland artist Mike Kabler said in a recent rant, “Be who you want and fuck who you want and shut up about it.” (I may be paraphrasing slightly.) Even so, I must admit I find much of what Jack Malebranche says in Androphilia about the desirability of masculine traits such as honor and dignity to be true, and his critique of the excesses of gay culture is in many ways incisive and insightful. I walked out of the reading last night feeling like I had more in common with him than I did before. Even if I’m not ready to subscribe wholeheartedly to his masculine religion – or any religion - I think he does deserve the applause he got last night for being the one to start a dialogue on this very touchy, and very timely, topic.

Zilch. this seems to be the one topic on the planet which does NOT have its own website or group.

God, why can't I stop thinking about this topic, brought up in the How Men Flirt thread? So here's a new thread devoted entirely to that controversial phrase: "You're hot." I wanted to agree, and say that I can't fucking stand people walking up to me and saying "You're hot." But then as I read the other responses, I felt really guilty writing that response. Apparantly I should be flattered that guys come up to me in a bar to tell me this. I should give them a medal for their gallant courage or something, and swoon at the compliment. But, why? Being told I'm hot doesn't make you interesting in the least. And, conceit be damned, but it really doesn't tell me anything I don't already know.

Sure, I'll admit it. I know I'm hot. I also know that it's a conscious effort., and it's something that's synchronized with current and local faggot standards. And if I wanted to, I could look reallllly different. There's things that go into my look, like precision shaving with emphasis to my bone structure, the right haircut, color, product, the right tattoos and piercings, the right amount of tan, working out at my gym, what I wear, how I carry myself, the kind of photographs I've allowed to be on my tribe profile, and the photos I didn't put on there, even make-up. Oh yea, there's make-up involved. You can't see it, and that's the point, but it's there.

The point is, me being hot doesn't so much reflect on me. It reflects on a whole lot of stuff I do. Stuff which I did in the past when I started in the adult industry, stuff I stopped doing for a while and got very different comments, then stuff I started doing to work in the industry again. It's part of my job to look this way.

But, coming up to me and telling me your opinion on how I look right now in the positive will get the exact same response as if you came up and said:

"Hey, you're not so attractive" I think I'd have to look at you and say "OK . . . (and then what?)" I mean, where are ya going with this? Attractive, not attractive, who cares? What's your name? What's my name? What makes us interesting as people? What are your dirty secrets, and twisted fetishes? What's going to make me go "Awwwwww" ? Then again--there is that one exception.

The one exception is the dirty pervy motherfucker who comes up and says "You're hot" but the translation in his eyes is "I don't care if you're flattered by that or not, I just want an excuse to bend you over, spit on my meat, and shove it in." In that case, I occassionally have to acquiesce.

How much does your sexuality factor in to your life?

For me I think the life gay men and women and transgenders lead CAN be vastly different than those of our straight counterparts because everything isnt laid out so neatly. My views on relationships and how i precieve HIV are highly different than that of straight guy my age. He's going to married or is at least expected to... and probably doesnt see HIV around him as much as the gay male does.

Being a minority within minority i'm used to the outside and side with the outsider almost at every turn. Some would argue their sexuality has no impact on who they are. Do you believe so?

Is it healthy to distress over being single? Is it healthy to search?
Not to long ago, I was completely hung up on finding...a boyfriend.
In my observations amongst my gay friends and aquaintances I single guys get in a panic about being alone while there are Couples who seem to only to be couples in writing and are not monogamous sexual or emotionally... very few are. I wont say whether i believe couples should be monogamous because thats a threshold that varries for every couple and every individual. I will say that it does seem theres "currency" though in being coupled and i find that worrisome..and the love addicts i run into living around a highly queer populated ghetto alarms me to a degree.

The idea of love in my eyes can easily become co dependency.

Is there pressure, in the gay biome, to be coupled? Certainly if straight america, at least, believes we're all promiscuous and are relationships period aren't valid? What does that do the single gay male?

Shouldn't finding relationships...meaningful lasting ones. be organic? Especially since gay men are under the immediate pressure to get married... have children (purposefully or by... "accident" like heterosexuals) and nest?

I'd like to explore our collective ideas on Relationships and the various questions and themes above, which are broad.

If you are single or coupled, Or feel you NEED someone or don't need anyone... bitter or happy....... how do you feel about the dating scene and culture surounding it?
